Israel Isidor Baline (1888 - 1989)
"...Irving Berlin is American music." - Jerome Kern
Born Israel Baline in Temum, Russia on May 11, 1888. Considered one of the most influential forces in American popular music of the 20th century (Jerome Kern said "...he is American
music!").
Berlin's father was a cantor, and he moved his family to New York City in 1893. Legend has it that it was a printing error on his first published song that gave him the name Irving Berlin. In 1911,
he wrote "Alexander's Ragtime Band", which became his first major hit and his career took off. He began writing for Broadway revues and musicals, including Ziegfeld's Follies.
Berlin wrote more than 800 songs, many of which are now classic standards, including "Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning", "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody", "Always", "Remember", "Blue Skies",
"Puttin' on the Ritz", "God Bless America", "Heat Wave" and "There's No Business Like Show Business". He wrote the scores for many successful films, including Top Hat (1935), Easter Parade (1948), Call Me
Madam (1953), Annie Get Your Gun and White Christmas (1954). Irving Berlin died in 1989 at the age of 101. He is a member of the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
