Jean Porter (1925 - )
Born in Texas. Cute, petite actress / singer. Began in films as a teenager, then moved into adult roles. She is a lot of fun! My favorite scene is Jean singing "You Take the High Note" with Red
Skelton and the gang in Bathing Beauty. Jean is also a lot of fun with Virginia Weidler in The Youngest Profession (1943). In 1948 Jean married Director Edward Dmytryk. They had three
children together and were married until his death in 1999. In 1984 Jean and Edward co-authored the book On Screen Acting.

Dick Powell (1904 - 1963)
Given name: Richard Ewing Powell; born in Mountain View, Arkansas. Actor / singer in Warner Bros. musicals with Ruby Keeler in the 1930s. Moved into gangster films in the 1940s and 1950s.
He was much more successful playing tough guys than he had been in musicals. Married to Joan Blondell (1936 - 1944) and June Allyson (1945 - 1963).

Eleanor Powell (1910 - 1982)
Given name: Eleanor Powell; born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dancer / actress; started on Broadway, moved into movies in 1935. Married Glenn Ford in 1943. Retired from films in the mid-1940s, and
worked off and on throughout the rest of her life in nightclubs, Las Vegas, etc. Eleanor Powell was quite possibly the greatest dancer af all time in the movies! Her tapping was unequalled by any
with the possible exception of Ann Miller, and her twirling was simply tops. My favorite Eleanor Powell dance scene is "Begin the Beguine" with Fred Astaire in Broadway Melody of 1940. It's
the only dance scene in which Fred appears to be really working hard!

Jane Powell (1929 - )
Given name: Suzanne Burce; born in Portland, Oregon. Jane began her singing career on Portland's KOIN radio at the age of seven. The Burce family moved to Los Angeles in the early 1940s
and Jane landed a part on the radio show "Hollywood Showcase." She sang an aria from "Carmen" and knocked 'em dead. As a result, she was booked on the Charlie McCarthy radio show and offered an MGM contract.
As was their usual practice with new-hires, MGM loaned Jane out for her two first films, and when she came back she scored with Holiday in Mexico. She continued to play teenage roles until she
replaced June Allyson in Royal Wedding, after which she moved into adult roles. She retired from films in 1957, but has kept busy since then with stage plays and occasional appearances on television.

William Powell (1892 - 1984)
Given name: William Powell; born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Started on stage and then in silent films. The advent of sound worked to his advantage, since he had a great voice. He moved to Warner
Bros., then to MGM. There, he attracted much attention when teamed with Myrna Loy for the first installment of the Thin Man movie series. By now, Powell was a star. He was equally adept at
comedy and drama, and enjoyed a very successful career at MGM. Married actress Diana Lewis in 1940, retired from movies in 1955. One of the all-time movie giants.

Elvis Presley (1935 - 1977)
Legendary Rock & Roll Singer, "The King." Born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935, his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee when Elvis was 13 years old. It was there that he began singing on radio and
signed with a local recording company. He signed with RCA Records in 1955, and his career began in earnest. Over the next ten years, Elvis sold more records than anyone who had come before or anyone
who would come after. He was an icon of American Rock and Roll and still has die-hard fans today. Elvis was drafted into the military in the late 1950s, which inspired the stage play and movie Bye Bye Birdie.

Vincent Price (1911 - 1993)
Given name: Vincent Price; born in St. Louis, Missouri. Prolific and immensely popular actor remembered primarily for his horror films (though they were by and large some of his worst films). Studied
drama at Yale and the University of London. Began his acting career in London. To Broadway in the mid-1930s, films in late 1930s. Played a diversity of roles until the mid-1950s when he began his
"reign of terror" on screen and television.
Staying up late and watching Vincent Price horror flicks on TV is one of my fond memories. Though the films - especially the special effects - were not all that great, they were
enough at the time to scare us to death! Those old films were good at stimulating the imagination, from which come the most basic emotions we have!
